Welcome to the BNSA, The Black Network for Sequential Artists!
I created this page because as an emerging comics artist and animator,
I've found the learning process to be confusing, isolating,
and frustrating. There is so much involved to making comics/animations/storyboarding,
and resources can be vague, courses can be expensive, and I've felt at times that I don't
belong in the community.
I am often one of the only Black people at events and I'm
tired of it! Black artists aren't being represented enough at sequential art events,
which makes me question who I can turn to for support.
I'm hoping this page can change the demographic and culture in the field-- but I'll be happy
if I'm able to give just one person the confidence to make a comic,
try their hand at animating, or simply learn something new.
WHAT IS SEQUENTIAL ART?
The term sequential art was coined by Will Eisner to describe
the art forms that use images in a specific order to tell a story. Comics are
the first example that usually come to mind, but you can run with this description
to include storyboarding, animation, and dare I say zines, as well.
Working in comics, zines, and animation, I've found that there's a lot of overlap ,
which is why I will be talking about them all.
I'm using the term sequential very
liberally, so hopefully the Ghost of Eisner won't haunt me.
